Planning and Budgeting : Allocating and Managing Financial Resources

Presenter(s): Sarah A. Beamer, Emory and Henry College; L. Carole Wharton, Smithsonian Institution

This workshop will help planners understand key budget concepts such as the relationship between planning and budgets, development of operating and capital budgets, and implementation and management of budgets. The workshop will provide tools and techniques including key definitions, types and uses of budgets, budgeting how to's, strategies for managing resource-allocation decisions within an institution's planning process, and formats for presentation of financial information to campus, governing boards, and external groups. Participants will have hands-on, small-group practice in budget building and presentation and in financial reporting, using data from a cross section of institutional types, as well as data participants have brought from their own institutions. Sarah Beamer is chief financial officer of Emory and Henry College and has experience in the corporate sector as a faculty member. Carole Wharton is director of planning, management, and budget at the Smithsonian Institution, has experience in corporate and private companies, and is presently SCUP treasurer.
This knowledge resource from SCUP is a preconference workshop presented at the Society's thirty-sixth annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–36, in Boston, MA (USA), in July of 2001.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–36 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP-36, our digital archives of SCUP-36 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
