Theory and Praxis: Planning Student Centered Facilities Presenter(s): Paul Brailsford, Principal, Brailsford & Dunlavey; Jim Carruthers and Claudia Scotty, The Ricca Planning Studio; Niraj Dangoria, University of Cincinnati
Participants will learn strategies that have resulted in proactive management of successful student-centered facilities projects, including university centers, recreation centers, residences, and dining facilities. Case histories illustrate the planning and project-management issues and efforts necessary for a successful facility. Using case histories, participants learn how to identify, clarify, and build consensus, obtain student involvement, handle decisions made throughout the project's life, deal with alternative forms of funding, and participate in the space-planning effort. The goal is to create facilities that contain flexible space, ensure the greatest efficiency per square foot, and are cost effective in terms of design, construction, and maintenance. This session helps the campus planner/architect gain the same skill sets as private developers for the planning and development of these types of facilities. Paul Brailsford is president at Brailsford and Dunlavey. Jim Carruthers is consultant, and Claudia Scotty is principal of The Ricca Planning Studio, Inc. Niraj Dangoria is director of campus planning at the University of Cincinnati. |
