Epidemic Change

Presenter(s): Phyllis H. Grummon, Michigan State University; Jan Urban-Lurain, Spectra Data and Research

Planners are increasingly being asked to explicitly create the environment that evokes and supports change. This workshop provides a framework for change from the field of epidemiology. Epidemics provide a model for how change happens quickly once it reaches a critical mass or tipping point. Participants in this workshop will learn about epidemiological principles-agents, infection, environment-and how to use them to create change on campus. A simulation created by the presenters, the Change Game, allows the participants to experience and apply the principles during the workshop. Epidemiological concepts allow planners to use the tools they have for involving stakeholders in change in a more systematic and effective way. Senior planners and outside institutions will find this workshop a stimulating way to view their work in change creation and change management. Participants will receive readings and materials pertaining to organizational change and the book, The Tipping Point. Phyllis Grummon has over 20 years of experience in organizational change and has managed numerous change projects as both an external consultant and internal facilitator. She is director of university planning for Michigan State University. Jan Urban-Luran is president of Spectra Data and Research and has extensive experience working with organizations in transition.
This knowledge resource from SCUP is a preconference workshop presented at the Society's thirty-sixth annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–36, in Boston, MA (USA), in July of 2001.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–36 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP-36, our digital archives of SCUP-36 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
