Campus Design: A Workshop in the Basics Presenter(s): William Colehower, Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott; Talitha Fabricius, Deborah Poodry, Ashrif Salloum, and Victoria Sirianni, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; John Ullberg, Cornell University
The composition of buildings and landscape that make up every college and university campus is a culmination of years of decision making by countless campus planners, administrators, presidents, trustees, alumni, donors, grounds maintenance personnel, and design consultants. Often planning and design decisions for campuses are made without the benefit of a common vision. This interesting and highly interactive workshop will take place at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and will offer participants insight on the role of design on the modern campus so that they can help their respective institutions articulate that vision. It will also provide a practical set of tools for defining the vision. Different people with varying responsibilities play roles in designing campuses, however, each may see the campus through different lenses. This workshop will be led by professionals from different positions and points of view (business administrator, campus planner, architect, and landscape architect), all of whom have a stake in maintaining a well-planned and designed campus. Take-home materials include a variety of design guideline and open-space plans samples, articles, and materials to help you define the landscape and open-space vision of your campus. William Colehower serves as senior associate at Sasaki Associates, Inc. Talitha Fabricius is the campus landscape architect. Deborah Poodry is director for capital project development, Ashrif Salloum is director of planning and design, and Victoria Sirianni is director of the facilities department, all at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. John Ullberg is the landscape architect for Cornell University. |
