A Facility to Support Undergraduate Science Education for the Real World

Presenter(s): Bruce Conn, Berry College; Jerry D. Percifield, O'Neal, Inc. Architects & Engineers
Convener: Peter Balcziunas, Pensylvania Association of Colleges and Universities

Scientific communities require individuals who can work in a team structure and who understand research procedures. Berry's new science center provides an interdisciplinary approach to science education with biology, chemistry, math and physics, geology, and computer sciences in one facility. Spaces allow multidisciplined teams to work on collaborative projects, and faculty laboratories encourage research in collaboration with their undergraduate students. Science students planning careers based on a bachelor's degree are exposed to real-world issues and experiences typically found only in graduate programs or corporate research laboratories.
This knowledge resource from SCUP is a concurrent session presented at the Society's thirty-sixth annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–36, in Boston, MA (USA), in July of 2001.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–36 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP-36, our digital archives of SCUP-36 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
