Space Innovation: From Parking Garage to Student Services Center

Presenter(s): Pamela Anderson-Brule, Anderson Brule Architects; Alan C. Freeman and Jim A. Zavagno, San Jose State University
Convener: Judith Nitsch, Judith Nitsch Engineering, Inc.

An attraction of San Jose State University is its location in Silicon Valley-a center of creative thinking. This influenced how the university approached solving some of its space needs by converting the first floor of a parking structure into a student-services center. Presenters will discuss the components that went into the planning effort for this unique project and the lessons learned. Emphasis will be placed on the interaction with the users to accommodate their space needs and to mitigate their concerns about being in a parking structure.
This knowledge resource from SCUP is a concurrent session presented at the Society's thirty-sixth annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–36, in Boston, MA (USA), in July of 2001.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–36 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP-36, our digital archives of SCUP-36 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
