Adaptive Reuse Can Abandoned Retail Malls be Successfully Transformed into College Buildings?

Presenter(s): Aaron B. Schwarz, Perkins Eastman Architects PC
Convener: Roberta Hopkins, University of Washington

Retail structures have become disposable buildings in America. Currently, new malls are being built and first-generation retail structures are being abandoned, causing a new wave of decay. Many colleges and universities have taken over these abandoned developments and have created vibrant educational communities. What physical characteristics make retail establishments more easily transformable to college buildings? This presentation will review this trend, discuss the rational behind it, and review the lessons learned from recent projects. Have colleges furthered their role as stewards for conservation and urban/suburban renewal?
This knowledge resource from SCUP is a concurrent session presented at the Society's thirty-sixth annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–36, in Boston, MA (USA), in July of 2001.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–36 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP-36, our digital archives of SCUP-36 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
