College Houses: Developing a Learning/Living Community at the University of Pennsylvania

Presenter(s): Charles Belson, John Chase, Theodore R. Newell, Ewing Cole Cherry Brott; Charlie Newman, University of Pennsylvania
Convener: Thomas Kearns, Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott

The University of Pennsylvania faces the deterioration of vintage buildings that no longer fit current expectations for residential life. Penn is now reinvesting in these buildings to keep them in service and to combine residential life and academic activity to form an integrated living/learning environment referred to as "college houses." Penn's historic quadrangle will be the focus in discussing planning and design issues central to planning such a community. This session is intended for campus planners, housing directors, and student-life administrators.
This knowledge resource from SCUP is a concurrent session presented at the Society's thirty-sixth annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–36, in Boston, MA (USA), in July of 2001.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–36 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP-36, our digital archives of SCUP-36 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
